With Thanksgiving fast approaching, and wanting to keep the family healthy during the holiday season, I have decided to begin our family preventative health care routine. I really do not want to be sick or take care of anyone who might be!
Many of you know that I do my best to eat well and take only the supplements I need to prevent any illness. Generally, if I see any stressful situations events approaching – traveling , going back to school after a holiday, or a holiday in general – I begin to re evaluate what my family is all doing and taking. Below are some my top 4 supplements and everyday holiday tips:
My Top 4 Supplements:
1. Essential Fatty Acids
This is why: They are vital to your being alive ( they are important for optimal function of the heart – think blood pressure, strokes – to the nervous system and the skin), however, your body can not make sufficient amounts therefore you need to get them from food.
Source: I suggest to my patients to eat olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds but also mix in flax seed oil, cod liver oil and hemp oil in their diet.
This is why: Known as the friendly bacteria in the gut, they aid in keeping the digestive system strong and healthy. Approximately 70% of the immune system is in the digestive system so you are getting lots of support by taking some probiotics.
Source: Some dairy products have added probiotics, but you can also find them in the refrigerated section of your local health food store. One of my favorite brands is HMF by Genestra.
PS Late last summer, a reader sent in a question about probiotics and kids. You can read the answer here.
3. Berry Well Immune Herbal Powder
This is why: This herbal powder has many tonifying herbs in its’ formula. I like this because it helps keep our immune system strong during periods of high stress or during the cold and flu season. The fact that it is a powder is an extra bonus because you can easily add it to a smoothie or mix it in with yogurt or applesauce.
4. Innate MaikeGold 404
This is why: This supplement is packed with a propriety blend of the immune stimulating mushrooms along with vitamin c. It is ideal to take daily during the cold and flu season to ward off any germs!

Everyday healthy holiday tips:
Wash those hands: This one maybe easy to forget ( or at least the kids may need some reminding!). It’s important to remember that most acute illnesses are due to poor hygiene and the easiest way to avoid this, is to wash your hands with soap and warm water.
Keep hydrated: During this time of year, we tend to drink more sugary drinks – hot chocolate, egg nog – which is okay in moderation but the problem is, we forget to drink water. Keep a pitcher filled with water available ( in the fridge ) at all times. If water doesn’t sound exciting, try putting slices of oranges and lemons to add some zest and flavor or perhaps making a pitcher of iced herbal tea ( a raspberry Zinger would be festive ).
Think color and protein: When preparing meals, think about whole colorful foods. They are very packed with all nutrients and are extremely tasty. Protein will help sustain you for longer periods (helping in over snacking) and will keep your blood sugar levels balanced ( ie: no crazy mood swings).
Take time for yourself: Try to get up a little early and begin your day with some exercise – a brisk walk, yoga or a trip to the gym. The morning is an ideal time because as the day gets busy, exercise is one of the last things that we will want or find the time to do.
Happy Healthy Holidays!
