I resisted for many years. And when people mentioned to me how wonderful it is for them, I told them that yoga and hikes in the woods were my meditation.
However, I had always been intrigued with Transcendental Meditation ( TM). I have heard about this organization on and off for the past 20 years and loved their method of teaching. Finally, last year, I enrolled my daughter and myself in their course. The timing was ideal because:
a) I am in LA thus it’s accessible.
b) My daughter is an actor and learning meditation would be incredibly beneficial for her.
My personal meditation why.
I’ m busy: physically and especially, mentally. I enjoy getting outdoors and moving my body yet sitting and being was more challenging. I felt a strong pull to slow down for a few minutes each day, to be quiet and focus on what I am grateful for. Within a few weeks of daily meditation, I felt much more relaxed, empathetic and compassionate.
A few other benefits…
- I am not depending as much on my botanicals and supplements.
- ( and Pearl, my daughter, is doing better on tests)
Feeling More Inspired
- Although I haven’t taken my blood pressure, my heart feels strong and balanced, and I bet any inflammation I may have in my body has decreased.
I have a confession
I loved everything I learned in TM. It’s science based with a ton of research to back it up. And wow, Pearl really took to understanding the why to meditating. If you have a TM center close to you, go to it. It was a fabulous weekend.
… committing to 2- 20 minutes sessions a day was difficult ( this is what they recommend). I did do it for a time and I did feel much better, however, I was unable to maintain it which made me feel both guilty and overwhelmed.
… I found the app, Headspace. Brilliant. You can set your specific time durations from 5 minutes to 20 ( or more). And you can choose from a variety of session ( series) topics. I began with 10 minutes and I am now at 20 minutes.
I LOVE IT.
I have recommended it to many patients. It’s powerful and a big part of preventative medicine.
