The Importance of Sleep During the Holidays
We all need it and during the holiday season, it’s sometimes tough to get a good night sleep: we either have a hard time falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up restful.
The body loves a routine. It actually relies on it to do its very important job of keeping us healthy. And one routine it appreciates is a regular sleep pattern; for example, going to bed a 10pm and waking up at 6am. This is probably the hardest thing to achieve in the next few weeks, however, there are a few tricks to help the body to wind down and get its important zzzs.
- Create a dark sleep environment: If the retina senses darkness, the pineal gland will be stimulated to make and release melatonin. On the other hand, if light is sensed, the pineal gland will not be stimulated to produce melatonin. This means that once darkness occurs, the brain will release the hormone, melatonin, the wake-sleep hormone, to allow for a good night sleep.
- Lavender oil on pillow: Lavender essential oil promotes relaxation, a quiet mind, and sleep. Place a few drops on your pillow before bed.
- Relaxation CD: This is a trick I used when my kids were little. I played a night night cd ( just music, no lyrics) that I only playing before nap or bed time. When the body heard that music, it would know it was time to sleep. It worked.
