Hydration: Eat Your Water

Top 3 reasons you should keep your body hydrated.

Keeping hydrated by eating your water is essential for your body. An easy nourishing way to keep hydrated is by eating our water. Our body is mostly made up of water, every cell needs it and water helps to flush out toxins or wastes that the body does not need or want. When water intake does not equal your output: urination, sweating from warm weather and strenuous exercise, and even higher altitudes, you become dehydrated.

WHY DRINK WATER?

1. Balance of Body Fluids

The body is 60% water. That’s a lot because we need these fluids to do many things in the body: maintaining body temperature, digestion & absorption plus aid in the transportation of nutrients.

2. Kidneys & Colon Need Water to Function

The bodies’ fluids transport waste products – that the body doesn’t want or need – in and out of cells. When an adequate amount of water is present, the kidneys and large intestine (colon) do a fabulous job of cleansing and ridding the body of toxins (through urination and bowel movements). Unfortunately, these toxins are not removed, wastes they will be reabsorbed in the body, and will go through the cycle of removal again – not an optimal way for the body to function.

3. Muscles Need Water

Muscles quickly become fatigued when not enough water or fluids are present in the body cells. It is best to begin drinking water 2 hours before exercise in addition to sipping water during workouts to avoid any fatigue.

On a side note: water therapy or hydrotherapy is a staple in my daily habits and something I suggest to all patients. You can learn more here.

EAT YOUR WATER

Keeping hydrated by eating our food is simple. About 20% of our fluid intake comes from foods. Watermelon and cucumber, both summer favorites, are more than 90 percent water. A bonus to eating your water is the abundance of nutrients you will receive.

Below is a few other high water content produce:

  • oranges, pomegranate, broccoli, mango, apples, pears, berries, plums, peaches, celery, watermelon, oranges, spinach, tomatoes, cucumber, cabbage, eggplant
