Why does my stomach growl?
Kids constantly ask curious questions about the human body to which we do not always know the answers. I plan to do a series on some questions I have received or heard from parents that kids ask about the human body. Here is our first one!
Why Does My Stomach Growl?
That funny rumbling or gurgling sound from your belly; that’s your stomach talking! It’s completely normal and nothing to worry about. It’s a sign that your body works hard to keep you healthy and happy.
Your stomach is a unique organ that helps you digest food. When you put food in your mouth, it travels down your esophagus and into your stomach. There, special stomach juices and muscles help break down the food into tiny pieces that your body can use to play, think, and grow.
Hungry Stomach
One of the main reasons your stomach growls is because you’re hungry! When you haven’t eaten for a while, your stomach makes noises to tell you it’s time for a snack or meal. These rumbling sounds are caused by the muscles in your stomach and intestines moving around and contracting. Your stomach is saying, “Feed me, please!”
Digestion Time
Your stomach also makes noises when it’s busy digesting food. After you eat, the muscles in your stomach work extra hard, squeezing and moving the food around. Sometimes, I call it the human body’s blender! This process, called peristalsis, helps break down the food even more and push it through your digestive system. As the food moves through your digestive system, it can cause your stomach to make funny sounds!
Swallowing Air
Sometimes, you can accidentally swallow a lot of air when you eat or drink too fast. This extra air in your stomach can cause it to make noises as it moves through your digestive system. That’s why eating slowly and chew your food well is essential.
Stress and Stomach Troubles
Believe it or not, even your feelings can affect your stomach! When you’re feeling stressed or anxious, it can cause your stomach to make more noise than usual. Certain foods, like beans or broccoli, can also make your stomach growl more because they’re harder to digest.
When to See a Doctor
Most of the time, a growling stomach is nothing to worry about. But if your stomach is making noises and other symptoms like pain, diarrhea, or vomiting, telling a grown-up is a good idea. They might want to take you to the doctor to ensure everything is okay.
To keep your stomach happy and healthy, try to:
- Eat regular meals and snacks
- Chew your food slowly and well
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day
- Avoid eating foods that do not make you feel good
- Get plenty of exercise and sleep
Remember, a growling stomach is just your body’s way of communicating with you. By taking good care of yourself and listening to your body’s signals, you can keep your tummy feeling its best!
